Environmental Department
Mission Statement:
To protect and monitor environmental issues of Tribal lands and resources of the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians. To maintain leadership role in natural resources, while promoting, preserving, and protecting the environment.
The Environmental Department funded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency General Assistance Program grant was established in November 2000. The Environmental Department develops environmental programs that protect human health and natural resources for the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians. Some of the current programs are being offered or in the initial stage of development are the following:
- Educational Outreach and Protection
- Environmental Reviews and Assessments
- Emergency Response
- Recycling Program
- GIS/GPS
- Wastewater
- Water and Air Quality
Other programs that may be incorporated into the future, may include:
- Lead-based paint
- Radon testing
- Endangered Species
- Wetland Protection
In addition to the programs listed above, the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians has become an American Red Cross Shelter, the first shelter of its kind in the LaSalle Parish. The shelter will only be open in disasters and only with authorization from the Red Cross. We are very proud to have this opportunity to assist those families in time of disasters.
